نعيب زماننا والعيب فينا
We blame our time (era) though we are the ones to blame
وما لزماننا عيبٌ سِوانا
No fault has our time (era) other than us
ونهجو ذا الزمان بغير ذنبٍ
We denounce these times even though they are blameless
ولو نطقَ الزمان لنا هجانا
Could time have spoken, it would have denounced us
وليس الذئبُ يأكل لحم ذئبٍ
A wolf would never prey on another wolf
ويأكُلُ بعضُنا بعضاً عيانا
While we devour each other in plain daylight
فدنيانا التصنعُ والترائي
Ours is a world of hypocrisy and pretense
ونحن به نخادعُ من يرانا
Whereby we try to deceive those who see us
مَضَى الصدقُ وأهلُ الصدقِ يا سعدُ قد مَضَوْا
The truth has passed, and the people of truth, O Saad, have passed away
فلا تطـلُبنَّ الصدقَ من أهل ذا الزمانْ
So do not seek honesty from the people of these times
فليس لهم صدقٌ ولا يعرفونهُ
For they have no truth and they do not know it
قد ارتبَكُوا في لُجّة المَيْن والدَّرَنْ
They are caught in a sea of deception and corruption
مَضَى الصدقُ وأهلُ الصدقِ يا سعدُ قد مَضَوْا
The truth has passed, and the people of truth, O Saad, have passed away
فلا تطـلُبنَّ الصدقَ من أهل ذا الزمانْ
So do not seek honesty from the people of these times
فليس لهم صدقٌ ولا يعرفونهُ
For they have no truth and they do not know it
قد ارتبَكُوا في لُجّة المَيْن والدَّرَنْ
They are caught in a sea of deception and corruption
مَضَى الصدقُ
The truth has passed
تَمَلَّكَهُم حُب الحُظوظِ وشَهوةُ النفوس
They fell captive to lust and desire
فقُل يا رب عافِ من الفِتَنْ
Say: Lord, protect me from these trials
فأين أُولُوا التقوى وأين أُولُوا النُهى
Where are the people of piety and reason?
وأين أُولوا الإيقانِ و العلمِ والفِطنْ
And where are the people of certainty, knowledge, and judgment?
وأين الرجالُ المُقتدَى بفِعالِهِم
And where are the men who lead by their example
وأقوالِهِم يا سعدُ في السرِّ والعَلَنْ
And their words, O Saad, in secret and in public
أَكُلُّهُمُ ماتُوا أَكُلُّهُمُ فَنُوا
Have they all died? Have they all perished?
أَم استَتَرُوا لمّا تعاظَمَتْ المِحَنْ
Or have they become hidden as these trials intensify?
مَضَى الصدقُ
The truth has passed
ولم يبقَ خيرٌ في الزمانِ وأهلِهِ
There is no good left in this time and its people
وقد هَجرُوا القرآنَ والعِلمَ والسُنَنْ
Since they have abandoned the Quran, knowledge, and the Sunnah
فآهٍ وآهٍ كم بقلبيَ مِن أَسَى
Woe to me, how miserable my heart is!
وكم لي وكم بي من غَليلٍ ومن شَجَنْ
And how incensed and desolate I feel!
قد ارتبَكُوا في لُجّة المَيْن والدَّرَنْ
They are caught in a sea of deception and corruption
